Being earnest about the prestigious day of this golden Jubilee Club, let me brief you on the fantastic past of this illustrious Club.
The Lions Club of Calicut was orchestrated on 31st December, 1959 when 31 young men of this City decided to band together with the avowed purpose of serving the society in which they live.
And their clan grew and grew and today we have 131 members. We even had the honour of having on our rolls Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and whenever he could he would drive all the way down from Mercara just to be with us.
It was the Lions Club of Calicut that brought the waves of Lionism to Kerala and we remember with gratitude the Lions Club of Coimbatore for having sponsored our club.
Lions Club of Calicut chartered on 31st December 1959 — the first Lions Club in Kerala — with 31 founding members, sponsored by Lions Club of Coimbatore.
Sponsored Lions Club of Palghat and Lions Club of Cannanore, extending the Lions movement across Kerala.
Constructed the Lions Park on the Beach — one of the major landmarks of Calicut to this day.
The Lions Hall — one of the club's most prestigious projects — was constructed, providing high utility value to clubs, associations and public functions.
Dedicated eye camps in association with Dr. Modie's Eye Hospital, later Aravind Eye Hospital. The club secured LCIF funding of ₹1.2 Crores for Comtrust Eye Hospital — today the Lions base hospital where an average of 4,000 people receive eye care every month.
With the help of Ln. P. Balakrishnan Nair Memorial Charitable Trust, the club constructed numerous houses for poor families across Kozhikode.
Constructed a Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind at Cheruvannur with LCIF support, and a shelter at the Leprosy Hospital — two permanent landmarks of service.
SUMAN — a Rehabilitation Centre for disabled women at Kattukulangara, Kozhikode. Inaugurated with an LCIF grant of ₹50 Lakhs, this project stands as one of the club's most impactful contributions.
The Lions Club of Calicut continues its legacy with 131 active members, ongoing community projects, and the vibrant spirit of Lionism alive in Kozhikode.
