The Lions Club of Calicut was chartered on 31st December 1959, when 31 young men of the city came together with the noble purpose of serving the society in which they lived.
From those humble beginnings, the club has grown steadily and today proudly stands strong with 131 members. The club also had the distinct honour of including Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa among its members, who would travel all the way from Mercara whenever possible to be with us. The Lions Club of Calicut was instrumental in bringing the spirit and movement of Lionism to Kerala. We gratefully acknowledge the Lions Club of Coimbatore for sponsoring our club and supporting our founding journey.
Know More
In the latter half of the year 1959 a group of service minded young Lions from Lions Club of Coimbatore came to Calicut with an idea to sponsor a new club in Calicut which at that time was a port city. They stayed here for several days to identify the right persons from different professions and occupations, obviously those with the attitude to serve the needy and those with talents and organizational abilities to take forward the Lions movement.
After several days of stay here they identified 31 young and middle-aged men and enrolled them as members and thus formed the Lions Club of Calicut, the first club of Kerala state. The charter members consisted of Doctors, Advocates, Planters and business men. Out of the 15 business men 3 were Gujaratis managing some of the top ranking business houses in Calicut and 2 others were Senior Managers of leading Industrial undertakings. The Charter President was Lion DR.K.N.Pisharody, the then Principal of Calicut Medical College and the Secretary Lion T.Balakrishnan Nair, the owner of a large Umbrella manufacturing company.
